Steve Dines at the Newbiggin Triathlon.
STEVE Dines has an anxious wait to see if he has qualified for next year’s Age Group European Championships in Austria, after posting an excellent time a the Newbiggin Sprint Triathlon.
Steve, a member of Wight Tri and also part of the IW Council Talented Athlete Scheme travelled to Newcastle for the event, which comprised a 750m swim, 21km cycle and 5km run.
After a very good swim of 14.59, Steve had a storming bike leg of 39.04 and followed it up with a great run of 24.45 to come fifth in the vet 55 to 59 category, in 1.21.46.
As only the first four from each age group qualify automatically Steve is hoping his good time is enough to earn selection.
Meanwhile, Cohan Tyler and Alex Broome competed in the Reading Standard Distance Triathlon, comprising a 1.500m swim, 44km cycle and 11.5km off-road run.
Cohan, who is also part of the Talented Athlete Scheme, had an excellent race to finish 15th, although he is still in the junior category. Fast splits in all three disciplines (24.46, 78.28 and 43.45 respectively), saw him finish in an excellent time of 2.30.18.
Alex, who is in his first season of triathlon, had splits of 30.39, 1.18.37 and 55.51 to come 72nd, in 2.48.59.
Cohan is going for qualification for the European Championships this weekend, at the Bala Triathlon.
