Dream start for duo

George Gosden, left, came sixth in the first round, with Chris Stay, right, taking runner-up spot.

MOTORCYCLE TRIALSCHRIS Stay and George Gosden proved their worth in the first round of the British Youth A Class Championships, in Derbyshire last weekend.

The teenage friends were competing at this top level for the first time and were faced with a real baptism of fire, as the course is considered dangerous and too difficult for a youth trial.

Several riders retired as they were unable to get through any of the 12 sections, and some gave up through sheer exhaustion. But the Island pair treated spectators to a real treat and, after five hours of hard riding, Chris finished second, and George, sixth.

Chris’s father, Alan, said: "The British A class is considered to be the toughest events in youth trials and you have to be exceptional to get in the top ten. So for Chris and George to finish second and sixth in their first event at this level is an amazing achievement for the Island lads, who are riding against well -supported team riders from around the country."

This weekend they travel to Scarbrough where they have been given permission to ride in the youth support round of the British Adult Championships for the first time.
