THE Brading 10K was quite a battleground for an East Cowes man and his son, who ran the event together for the first time.
In fact, it was the first time Gary Gifford, 63, had ever taken part in an organised run of this kind.
After leading his son, Christ the King College maths teacher Luke Gifford, 31, during the early stages, the refuse worker was pegged back to make it an exciting run on the final 200m of the Smallbrook Stadium track.
Luke eventually won by 19 seconds with a time of 51.19.
After the race, Gary, of Acorn Gardens, East Cowes, said: “I’ve always kept pretty fit, from playing squash and rugby, but I found it hard. I’ll have to think hard about doing this again.
“I enjoyed the first half but but when I got to Tesco, my legs were starting to go.
“At least I achieved my aims — first, to finish it and to finish inside an hour.”
