ALSAGER Arts Centre presents a double bill on Tuesday October 23.

Performance artist Augusto Corrieri will be premiering his new solo work, Quartet (for Anna Akhmatova).

Quartet is based on an accident that took place at La Scala Theatre in 1913.

During a ballet a Russian dancer found herself performing a solo in complete silence, the conductor having forgotten to start the accompanying music.

After the dancer's exit the music began playing, but to an empty stage.

"I decided to use that mistake to make a performance," said Augusto Corrieri.

"So I first made a show, with four elements - movement, objects, music and words.

"Then I meticulously separated each element from the other.

"The show now happens four times, but each time you only see the one element in question.

"So, for example, in the section entitled The Music, I actually just stand off stage and let the entire musical score play from beginning to end.

"This creates a situation in which each audience member plays an active role in the unfolding of the piece - connecting the different parts in their own minds, spectators will imagine a performance which, ultimately, they will never get to see."

Quartet is a playful exploration of the idea that theatre is not what takes place not on the stage, but rather what happens in the minds of the spectators.

The second part of the bill is Grass by performance band Leonard.

For the past two years Leonard have been researching the grass under your feet - which you will touch 223,786 times in your life.

"On this night, this wealth of information gathered from politicians, scientists, garden centres, pole vaulters and dogs transforms into a kind of surprising live archive," said the band.

Formed in 2005, Leonard consists of three artists, and has a growing reputation for innovation and quality in contemporary performance.
