RUGBY: Upper Eden achieved a rare away victory over Cumbria/North Lancs League opponents De La Salle on Saturday.

The 9-3 scoreline reflected the tightness of a game dominated by the forwards, but it was a result that secures Upper Eden's league status for another season.

The Eden back row of Colin Wolstenholme, Kark Haygarth and Ian Gowing put in a huge amount of work to help their pack win possession and create promising field positions.

Unfortunately they were turned over at critical points and it was left to Matt Allinson to score the vital points with two penalty goals, despite a testing cross-wind.

The forwards' war of attrition continued in the second half but Allinson bagged another penalty and, although the home side pushed hard, Eden only conceded a penalty goal and held their line with some outstanding defensive work.

l Upper Eden Boars were again in outstanding form in their Miller Homes League clash with Kirkby Lonsdale 2s. Avenging a heavy defeat at Kirkby, they ran out 48-0 winners with tries by back row Dale Fisher, winger Nathan Williams, man of the match and No8 Dave Birkbeck (2), Steve Henderson, skipper Phil Hughes, Dan Todd and Thomas Newbury. Back in action Ben Alderson, out since October with a broken wrist, kicked four conversions.

The first XV are at home to Rossendale and the Boars entertain Fylde 4s next Saturday.
