FOOTBALL Totton and Eling 0, Newport 4
NEWPORT rocketed to the top of the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division on Tuesday night, with a thumping victory at Totton and Eling.
Leading the way was Iain Seabrook, whose two first-half penalties got the Islanders on their way. These goals, coupled with his equaliser and winner at Follands Sports last weekend, have earned Newport the points they needed to reach the summit.
On Tuesday, Newport took the lead when Charlie Smeeton was fouled in the box, with SEABROOK dispatching the resulting spot-kick.
And SEABROOK was on target again 15 minutes later with another penalty, this time for a foul on Tom McInnes.
In the second half, Newport extended their lead with a scrambled goal from Darren POWELL, before a wonderful curling shot from outside the area by Matt EVANS sealed the victory.
Newport: Streeter, Younie, Holmes, Fleming, Oatley, Seabrook, McDonough, Powell, Smeeton, Evans, McInnes. Subs: Russell, Butt, McKie, Scovell.
Follands Sports 2, Newport 3
Newport staged a late comeback to take all three points at Hamble’s Follands Sports on Saturday.
Follands were unbeaten at home this season, and showed their intent by going a goal up after just six minutes, Ryan Long converting. Cameron Farley then had to make a point-blank save to keep the Islanders in it, but the turning point came in the 22nd minute, when Follands’s James Roden was given a straight red card for raising his hand to Farley.
The man advantage helped Newport back in, and after Jake Younie’s shot went over the bar, they eventually equalised as Charlie SMEETON headed in from Iain Seabrook’s free kick.
After the break, Follands took advantage of a sloppy start from Newport and went ahead once more, through Matt Cornfield. It was at this point Newport made their first substitution, Gary Streeter coming on for the unwell Farley.
As the match progressed, Newport searched for chances to get back into the game, with James Butt and John McKie coming on for Darren Powell and Tom McInnes.
With just ten minutes to go, man of the match SEABROOK tucked the ball home from six yards to make it 2-2 and then, with three minutes left, he scored his second to cap off a superb performance and secure the win.
Newport: Farley, Younie, Holmes, Fleming, Oatley, Seabrook, McDonough, Powell, Smeeton, Evans, McInnes. Subs: Streeter, Butt, McKie.
