Controversial plans to widen the A406 North Circular Road in Bounds Green will be discussed next Tuesday (May 12).

Organised by the environmental group Friends of the Earth (FOE) the meeting will give local people the first chance to talk about the scheme since it was put forward in 1992.

Enfield Southgate MP Stephen Twigg and Stephen Joseph, the director of pressure group Transport 2000 will speak at the meeting.

Chris Bainbridge from Haringey Council, which is opposing the road widening, will also give a talk.

Paul Hamblin from Tottenham and Wood Green FOE said: The road scheme would lead to the demolition of hundreds of homes, increased traffic levels and noise for many people.

Environment secretary John Prescott has promised radical changes to transport policy and this destructive road scheme is currently being reviewed.

It is outdated and unacceptable and should be deleted from the roads programme.

The meeting has been called because we want to give local people the opportunity to see what is planned.

It will help us send a strong message to the local MP and government that they should be putting communities before the car.

The meeting takes place at Middlesex University, the Bounds Green Campus at 7pm.
