A PERSONAL best throw almost won IW athlete Garry Newton, a medal at the World Indoor Masters Championships in Budapest last weekend.

Shot putter Garry, 36, of Shanklin, represented Great Britain at the championships after winning the Southern England Indoor Masters Championships and British Masters Indoor Championships.

The competition was fierce in Budapest, with a high-quality 15-strong field. He had a safe opening throw and then a second throw of 14.00m earned his place in the final. Lying sixth going into the final round, Garry threw an indoor PB of 14.29m to move up to fourth.

He said: "I was aiming for a top eight position before the competition, based on the distances the other competitors were throwing.

"I am over the moon to finish fourth. I am closing in on a medal at international level, which is very motivational."

The outdoor season kicks off this month for Garry, who competes for Southampton in the British League.
