Garry Newton is a top senior thrower in discus as well as shot putt.
ATHLETICS THROWER Garry Newton set a new IW shot putt record in his warm-up for the European Indoor Masters Championships.
IW Athletics Club member Garry, 34, set the record at the Southern Counties Masters Championships, at Lee Valley Athletics Centre.
It was Garry’s second competition of the year, and he was hoping to build on his shot putt win and distance set at the Cardiff MET Indoor in January.
In the first throw of the competition, Garry set a new season’s best at 13.93m, just 7cm short of his own IW record.
His second throw proved to be the winner, at the new record distance of 14.18m.
"Even though the throw was good, there was still room for improvement, which is very encouraging as I now know I can go a lot further," said Garry.
The next competition for Garry is on the March 17 in London, with the European Indoor Masters Championships, in San Sebastian, Spain, the following week.
Garry added: "My performances last year means I am seeded in the top five for the Europeans.
"It’s going to be a very close top ten based on ranking distances, so the pressure is on to throw well and live up to my seeding."
