BOXINGHOLLY Keats has successfully defended her British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) 64kg boxing title.

The former Carisbrooke High School student, studying for a PhD in brain biology at Portsmouth University, defeated Aberdeen’s Katherine Atkins on points, winning 21-7, at the Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield.

Holly said afterwards: "The quality has really gone up in the last year and it was great to fight on the same night as the men. It’s great for women’s boxing as a sport.

"It was a tough match, because it was a championship bout they show the current scores after each round, so after the second round the score was 18-0 to me and so her coaches sent her in to war for the last two minutes.

"I kept her at bay though and got the win by keeping on my toes."
