DON Hobbs is the Island’s veterans’ champion after a tough competition at Smallbrook’s table tennis centre.

He defeated Chris Angus in straight sets, after knocking out Andrew Ely in the semi-final stages 3-1. Chris had made the final after being taken to a fifth-set decided by Lee Orton.

In all, there were 16 players taking part, split into four groups of four. The winners and runners-up in each group made the quarter finals.

Don won group C, with Steve White second, while Chris won group B, with Peter Moore second.

Andy won group A, with Dave Hilliam in the runner-up spot, while Lee won group D, Jim Hall taking the last quarter-final place.
