Southampton Otters 0, IW 6
IW GAINED gained revenge for last season’s defeat at Southampton to stay unbeaten and remain top of Hampshire 6.
Plenty of attacking prowess, plus the impressive statistic of preventing Otters from having a single shot, earned them a deserved victory.
Starting as they meant to go on, IW — featuring veteran Kevin Dean — camped in the Otters’ half but, despite creating chance after chance, they could not score. The breakthrough eventually came when Richard Reynolds was in the right place to pick up a loose ball and confidently struck home.
They doubled their advantage when, after a rare foray into the IW half, Otters were caught on the counter attack and Colin Simmonds scored.
With the game becoming rough, and several shoulder checks being blown, the umpires called for calm and warned the players any more would result in a yellow card sin bin offence.
This message clearly didn’t get through to a Southampton forward, who barged Stuart Allen off the ball, and was duly given his marching orders.
Into the second half and the IW continued to dominate, with Rob Forrest producing a brilliant solo run, picking out Stephen Woodford, who had the simplest of tasks to score.
Forrest then got on the scoresheet himself from another driving run and shot, before picking up his second.
James Liddiard grabbed the Island’s sixth as the home team’s heads dropped.
Reynolds was then sent to the sin bin himself, when he was judged to have shoved an Otters player, but IW saw out the remaining minutes comfortably.
With Fordingbridge and Salisbury also both winning, the Island remain top with a 100 per cent record alongside those two sides but a superior goal difference.
