HOCKEY IW 5, New Milton II 1
REVENGE on the only team to take points from the triumphant IW was very sweet last weekend.
After a quiet start, IW took control and it was inevitable the goals would come.
Stephen Woodford capped an astonishing season with an opening goal which was his 62nd of the season.
They soon doubled their lead when Colin Simmonds was picked out in a short corner routine.
An excellent goal just before half time effectively sealed the game for the home team, as Tom Gould weaved through the field before unselfishly passing to Simmonds to tap in.
The second half continued where the first had finished, with Craig Bruce slamming home after another good team effort.
New Milton pulled one back near the end, but it was soon cancelled out when Rob Forrest netted his 32nd goal.
The win capped an amazing season for IW, who finished their season having scored 163 goals in 22 games, and conceding just 29.
Their season is not quite finished though, as they have a Hampshire Trophy semi-final with Havant V on April 22.
The club held its end-of-season awards night last weekend.
Stuart Allen was named the first team’s captain’s player of the season and clubman of the year while veteran John Pearson was made second team captain’s player of the year.
Player’s player awards went to James Liddiard for the first team, and Tom Young for the second team.
In the ladies’ section, first team captain’s player of the year was Claire Caddick, while the player’s player was Tanisha Janzen.
For the second team, captain’s player of the year was Louise Simmonds, with Leah Williams named player’s player.
Young players of the year were Jack Nicolaou and Georgia Whittle, while most improved players went to Tom Gould and Leah Williams.
Outstanding achievement awards were presented to Stephen Woodford for his 62 league goals, while Tanisha and Saskia Janzen were recognised for being called up the British Colleges Ladies national team.
All members of the first and second men’s team were given their league winners’ medals.
