Ricky Attrill on the attack.
Wightlink Tigers 0, Solent and Gosport Devils 3A GOAL in each period condemned Tigers to a pre-Christmas defeat against rivals Solent and Gosport Devils.Devils — who have only lost one match all season — featured several former Tigers and Wightlink Raiders, from Will Francis and Richard Nembhard to Kevin Tanner and Elliot Foley. And despite incurring the bulk of the penalties on the night, Devils were, in the end, comfortable winners.Tigers failed to find a way to break down the Devils’ defence and get past their inspired goalkeeper, Christian Cole. And at the other end, despite a sound display from Scott Bickerstaff, there were just some shots he could not stop. The game began evenly enough but the turning point came just three minutes from the end of the first period when Tigers could not believe their bad luck.A spell of pressure on the Devils’ net ended with a goal but as Devils’ Greg Wyatt had pushed the net off its moorings, it did not count. Tigers protested the goal but it was waived. It was almost written in the script that, straight from the restart it would be Wyatt who broke away from the pack and netted at the other end.Tigers could have felt hard done by and rightly so, but dusted themselves down and tried to find an equaliser, although it was to no avail.Devils’ second goal, scored with half an hour gone, was one Bickerstaff would want back, as Kristopher Abbott netted from a speculative shot from inside the centre circle.Their third came just after the restart in the third period, Wyatt again popping up to score.Following this, the mainlanders incurred a string of penalties, giving Tigers a two-man advantage on two separate occasions. However, their powerplay lacked teeth and Cole was barely troubled.Man of the match was Luke Tull.Tigers’ next home match is against Bristol on January 21.
