Ironman Ian battles through

TRIATHLETE Ian Robinson-Phenix returned to his roots in South Africa to complete an incredible challenge last weekend.

The Wight Tri member travelled to his old home town of Nelson Mandela Bay for Ironman South Africa, in stifling conditions.

The 2.4-mile swim did not go well, with a bottleneck at the first buoy causing many swimmers problems, including for Ian, who swallowed a lot of water, and then later suffered cramp and an upset stomach.

Despite this, he tackled the 112-mile bike leg — in 80-degree temperatures — with real determination gained more than 700 places.

Finally, he completed a marathon, and crossed the finish line in 14 hours, eight minutes.

Ian’s next Ironman event is The Outlaw in Nottingham in 15 weeks’ time.
