Ventnor’s Lewis Kirby.
ISLAND boxers produced excellent performances at a Gym01 show in Portsmouth last weekend.
Representatives from Ventnor and Wightlink-sponsored Newport fought in five bouts, with three resounding victories and two narrow defeats.
Newport’s Josh Appell made his return to action after an 18-month absence and, with the last fight of the night, produced a brilliant win to not only take the bout on points, but also take home the Boxer of the Night award.
Josh, 25 took on Brighton University’s Lee Jenkins in three three-minute rounds without headgear, as rules now dictate elite boxers no longer require protection.
Having won the opening two rounds comfortably, he tired a little in the third but did enough to win the judges’ vote.
Dominic Winston, 20, also had a great night, stopping his opponent, Portsmouth University’s A. Moore, in the first round.
For Ventnor, their victory came in a surprise package. New member Lewis Kirby travelled along to watch but ended up heading in the ring to take on Ashley Haines, of Leigh Park, after Lewis’s friend, Liam Harper, did not match Haines in weight.
Without any preparation, Kirby produced a stunning performance, winning on points.
Elsewhere there were points defeats for Danny Green against good friend Aaron Ahlumalia from the host club, and for Doug Snape in his bout.
