CANOEING

OLYMPIC canoeing hopeful Richard Jefferies has one last chance to secure a spot in the Team GB squad for London 2012.

Richard, 25, a former Sandown High School pupil, will compete with other GB canoeists in a home nations event in Germany this weekend, in a bid to secure the last place in the squad.

Richard, who now trains full-time in Nottingham with GB canoeing, had hoped to win a place in the squad at the European qualifier in Poznan, Poland, but narrowly missed out in the C1 200m event.

Richard’s canoe filled with water in his first race and it happened again in his second race, just five metres before the finish. He finished fifth, meaning he did not progress to the final.

Richard said: "It was probably the worst possible conditions, the course is known for being really choppy.

"It was horrible to fall so close to the end but I am still confident I can do it this weekend."
