Lawson and Ely have unbeaten runs ended

By - Friday, November 20, 2009
TABLE TENNISUNBEATEN individual records crashed in what is normally a quiet week of the IW Table Tennis League, reserved for postponed matches.
The two leading sides, CPC Appley and Gladiators produced a thrilling match which the former won 6-4.
Scott Lawson lost his unbeaten record against George Downing and Andrew Ely lost his against Scott. However, Downing’s notable hat-trick did not save his team from defeat.
Appley were again in action against Newport Vics A, and their 7-3 victory gave them the maximum points.
Scott Lawson was sensationally beaten by Pedro Lopez in three straight sets and has now lost more matches in this one week than he did all of last season.
It was Lee Orton who was to prove Appley’s hero with three wins, and Robert Love was similarly in magnificent form beating both Pedro and the formidable Mike Bulpitt and falling to Dave Hilliam in five pulsating sets.
Vics were again in action against Ryde Tigers but this time they were on top by a 7-3 score to which Dave Hilliam contributed three. In Division 2, CPC Stooges won the local derby against CPC Panthers by the closest of margins, 6-4.
John Moyse and Steve Downing won three each and their win put them into second place.
If they wish to stay in that position they will need to improve their doubles play considerably.
The local Ryde derby was won by Cheetahs against Lions 7-3, which means the relegation fears of the former remain grave. For the winners, Mike Platt returned to form with three wins as did Mike Jose.
His tally included an epic match against Ian Loosemore in which he won the fifth set 14-12.
So the so-called free week produced the best round of the league so far.
