BOXING
EMERGING boxing star John Marvin has had his first major victory of the season.
John, 19, of Ventnor Boxing Club, won the regional round of the CYP (Clubs for Young People) Championships in Gosport on Sunday, defeating Brad Tyler, of Coombe Martin ABC, Devon.
He put in a commanding performance in the under-81kgs category, ensuring Brad had two standing counts before the fight was stopped in the second round.
He now goes through to the Southern Counties finals next week, although he may have a walkover to the next stage.
The win was the perfect response to a disappointing defeat in the Southern Counties Championships in the Isles of Sheppey, where he lost on points to an opponent who punched below the belt.
