A SUDDEN-death playoff decided the Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club Championship last weekend, with Darren Masterton losing out to Matt Barnicoat.
Masterton produced a great round of 67 to hold a four-shot lead at the end of the first day, but a second round 77 left him level with Barnicoat, who birdied the last hole of his second round to also finish on a gross 144.
So the contest went to a playoff. Both had good drives off the first tee, Barnicoat hitting the green and Masterton just short.
Masterton chipped to 10ft away from the hole, while Barnicoat lagged his putt to six inches for par, meaning Masterton had to hole his putt to extend the playoff.
Unfortunately, Masterton’s putt lipped out, handing the championship to Barnicoat.
Third in the scratch was George Foreman, who finished on a total of gross 146.
In the handicap competition for the Roger Matthews Salver, Brian Price had nett scores of 70 and 63 to win by two shots from Dave Maidment. Third was Stef Brochocki.
The Melville Hall Cup, an 18-hole competition on Sunday, was also won by Price with his nett 63, from Tony Williams and Conor Richards who both scored nett 67.
More than 125 players took part in the championship, the largest entry the club has seen for many years.
