With Brian Bailey, from left, the winners Alisha Wagstaff, Sam Spicer, Nicholas Matthews, Josh Elmore and Mikey Mitchell.
GOLF MIKEY Mitchell produced a consistent performance in changeable conditions to win the scratch title at Newport’s junior championship, sponsored by Yokogawa Marex.
On a calm morning, Mikey pulled into a three-shot lead over Josh Elmore after the first 18 holes, and even though the wind increased during the second round, he carded an excellent gross 156 to take the title. Ollie Wilson eventually took second with 158, with Josh a shot behind.
Josh did enough, however, to take the handicap title, his nett score of 131 being five shots under his handicap.
In the stableford competition for players with a handicap over 28, Sam Spicer edged out Elliot Webb on count back with a score of 29. Winning the girls’ competition for the second year in a row with a score of 60 was Alisha Wagstaff.
Nicholas Matthews was determined not to relinquish the under-tens trophy which he had won for the last three years, and his score of 38 was enough to win it one more time before he moves into the main competition.
Nearest to the pin prizes went to Nicholas Matthews and Dylan King respectively.
The trophies were presented club captain Brian Bailey.
Mark Hancott won Newport Golf Club’s New Clubhouse Medal last weekend.
More than 60 players competed, but only eight shot par or better. Mark (6) won with a nett 63, including three birdies, beating Maxwell Powell (20) on countback.
Malcolm Bricknell (17) was third with 64.
