Solent 1 35, Gurnard 1 39
SOLENT’S new-look first team showed some signs of gelling in this match, but it was ultimately not enough against Gurnard, who took the game by just four goals.
Solent 1 is going through a transitional period this season, with a number of new faces moving up from the club’s lower squads, but the Ryde team worked hard to match Gurnard.
The established shooting combination of Katia Siska and Kelly Ross managed to match Gurnard’s Becky Healey and Jordan Ayton goal for goal early on, and Carley Marshall made some good interceptions in the middle of the court to gain possession for Solent.
In defence, goalkeeper Lorraine White and goal defence Raegan Booth tried to break down any Gurnard attack with tight man-marking and by snatching loose rebounds.
Gurnard held on to a narrow lead, going in at half time 23-20 ahead.
Solent maintained their game in the second half, with centre-court players Leigh Burbidge and Rebekah Furmidge working hard to get the ball into the shooting circle.
Gemma Cowley came on in defence, managing to slow Gurnard’s fluid play and Solent’s player-of-the-match, Raegan, made some well-timed interceptions.
Solent came close to reducing the deficit to one goal in the final quarter but Gurnard managed to steal possession and score twice in quick succession, stretching the gap to four goals.
