ATHLETICS

A LONG season is ending in style for Bonchurch athlete Nick Percy, who won three gold medals at the Scottish under-20s championships at Grangemouth last weekend.

The 17 year old blew away the competition to set national — and IW —records in hammer, discus and shot putt.

His victory in the hammer was all the more impressive given it was the first time this season he had thrown it, and, with only an hour’s training under his belt, threw 61.87m.

In the shot putt, he broke the Island record for a 12th consecutive time, recording 16.31m, and although his discus throw was under par at 51.38m, it was still enough for gold.

His dad, Andrew, was with him for the competition, and said: "It was a really long day for Nick with 11 hours of competition, so by the time the discus took place he was really tired."
