BOWLS

THERE was no joy for Bowls IW again in their final Middleton Cup group match, as they lost to Middlesex.

The Islanders looked on track for a much-needed victory but a weak final quarter meant they finished 126-105 down.

After ten and 15 ends of play, IW held a narrow advantage but in what has become symptomatic of their performances this season, they let it slide, scoring only 27 shots against 49 conceded.

The loss left them firmly anchored at the bottom of the group.

The rink of John Wilkins, Bill Pike, Peter Furmidge and Darren Griffith were involved in a close game, and stuck doggedly to their task doing well to record a good 18-15 win.

Also successful were Barry Bridgeman, Gordon Day, Dennis Mulhern and Dave Gustar, who won by one shot.

Robbi Hayes, John Marsh, Tony Lloyd and Travis Meller went down 18-15 after failing to add to their score over the last three ends, while Tony Partridge, Roger Payne, Paul Attrill and Keith Beckett let a 23-12 lead go, losing 24-23.

Mike Cox, Roy Smith, Martin Butchers and John Crews lost 26-17, while Simon New, Mike Strand, John Pearce and Alan Cawdell lost 26-14.
