Enfield 4

St Albans City 0

(Ryman League

premier division)

ENFIELD'S magnificent 4-0 win over St Albans City at Boreham Wood on May 2 secured their status in the Ryman League premier division for another season.

The final table showed the importance of that win as the E's finished in 14th place but just two points clear of the drop zone.

An exciting final game at Hendon on Saturday saw Enfield beaten 3-2 by Hampton & Richmond Borough, but by that stage Jim Chandler's men knew they were safe.

A relieved Chandler said: 'The superb performances against Aldershot and St Albans have kept us up. It's been a tough season having to play on different grounds and it's been a struggle but on the surface at Boreham Wood, which is like a carpet, we have proved we are as good as anyone.

'If we can continue to play there next season we have no excuses and we can look forward with optimism. I would like to keep the nucleus of the squad together but we do need more strength in depth and I will look to bring a few new players in.'

St Albans had beaten the E's 5-0 before Christmas but revenge was sweet for an Enfield side who had a two-goal cushion within six minutes.

James Bunn crossed for Jamie Morris to head home then Morris returned the favour with a clever ball across the goalmouth for Bunn to slide home.

Jerome John was forced to make a string of excellent saves as St Albans sought to reduce their arrears.

Enfield made the game safe with two further goals in the closing stages. Bunn set up Morris who found the back of the net from the edge of the box. A shot from Danny Jones was then parried by Saints keeper Imber only for Bunn to pounce on the rebound.

Saturday's game saw the in-form Bunn opening the scoring on five minutes after a back pass rolled under the foot of the Hampton keeper.

But within two minutes the visitors were level with a penalty and they took the lead before half time.

Hampton extended their lead just after the break, then Jones pulled one back with a penalty after Bunn had been fouled in the box.
