BOWLSPAULINE Proud has once again won the IW ladies’ four-wood singles championship — but this time not without the impressive challenge of her opponent.
All the action for the ladies’ county finals this year took place at Ventnor Bowls Club and Pauline could enjoy home advantage as she took on Sally Burton, of Newport.
The result was not certain until the very end as Pauline took the match 21-17.
It was her second final of the day, having been a part of the fours’ final.
She teamed up with Olwyn Hillidge, Liz Deacon and Val Newton for Ventnor, as they faced Plessey’s Margaret Arnett, Maureen Lockyer, Shireen Augustus and Joyce Utteridge.
After a hard-fought match the result was a win for the Plessey side, 18-15.
This was followed by the two-wood singles between Daphne Stanton, of Shanklin, and Auriol Ash, of Ventnor.
This was the closest final of the day with the scores equal after 21 ends, resulting in a extra end playoff.
The final end could not have been tighter but it was Auriol who held her nerve to win 15-14. Having been in the winning fours team, Maureen Lockyer and Shireen Augustus, of Plessey, played Di Vines and Marie Maher, of Bembridge, in the final of the pairs. This was an easy win for Maureen and Shireen, as they raced to a 18-6 victory.
The men’s county finals take place on Sunday, at Plessey. The action starts at 10.30am.
The singles’ final will be contested by Alan Best (Ventnor) and Jack Berry (Shanklin), with Ben Mackett and Peter Furmidge (Cowes Medina) facing Robbi Hayes and Keith Beckett (Shanklin) in the pairs final.
The triples’ final is between Simon New, Ben Mackett and Mark Griffith (Cowes Medina), and David Jones, Travis Meller and Richard Jeffery (Shanklin).
The fours’ event will be contested by Darren Griffith, Paul Dickenson, Fred Rylands and Mark Griffith (Cowes Medina), and Colin Worsfold, John Pearce, Martin Butchers and John Crews (Plessey).
