The researchers of a new history book about Addiscombe are hoping that Heritage readers will be able to help identify the group of soldiers shown in an old photograph.

Steven Collins and Anne Bridge, who are currently compiling the second volume of the Book of Addiscombe, were given the picture by one of their contributors and the pair are eager to put names to the many faces.

The 1943/44 picture is of the Addiscombe Home Guard and was taken at Woodside School. In the background you can clearly the chimneys of Handley's Brickworks.

Steve said: "We are eager to find out more about this picture of the Addiscombe Home Guard in other words, Dad's Army!

"Who are these people? We want names, history and anecdotes."

To date, just one of the soldiers has been identified; George Turner (second from the right, two down from the back) who had a shoe repair business, first at 15 Leslie Park Road and later at 51 Leslie Park Road.

He was by Turner's Garage (no relation) when it was badly bomb damaged during the war.

It was George's daughter, Christine Lockley, contributed the photograph.

Heritage readers can take a close-up look at the men in the photograph by visiting the new Addiscombe Online web site on www.addiscombe-online.co.uk.

Segments of the panoramic picture will be available for web users to zoom-in' on individual faces.
