TELEVISION cameras filmed child volunteers buying X-rated videos for Bromley's Trading Standards team.

The volunteers tried to buy 18-certificate videos in a snapshot survey assessing how many retailers sell adult videos to children.

The film crew was making a five-part children's documentary series, to be shown on ITV in the spring, about sex and violence.

Bromley Trading Standards tested 10 shops. Four sold adult videos to the children without asking for proof of age.

Head of commercial services Clive Davison said: "We were surprised at the high proportion of retailers who sold videos to our child volunteers."

Following a sale, a Trading Standards officer informed the manager it is an offence to sell a video to a child under the specified age.

Managers were then told no further action would be taken on this occasion but would be offered advice about staff training.

Traders caught selling or renting a video to a person under the specified age can be fined £5,000 or imprisoned for up to six months.
