SWIMMING

THE water at Medina Leisure Centre wasn’t as fast as in previous years, as only two records tumbled at the 2013 IW Sprints Championships.

Held over two weekends, the championships covered all the shorter distances over the four swimming disciplines — freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke — as well as the 100m individual medley.

The two new record holders are both West Wight Swimming Club members, and both achieved the feat in the medley.

Lottie James in the girls’ 13 to 14 years category, finished in 1.14.23, breaking the record set by Louisa Critchley in 2007, by almost a second.

Meanwhile, Luke Herbert, in the same age group, finished in 1.12.31, to beat Sam Sussmes’s 2011 record by a second and a half.

Overall, Lottie and Seaclose swimmer Josh Begg were the stars of the show, winning all five events in their age groups.

Tilly Jones, who like Josh, swam in the ten years age group, and Matt Barber, in the over-19s, were also impressive winning four out of five categories.

Several swimmers had three wins, including Luke Herbert, Sam Sussmes in the boys’ 15 to 16 years age group, Joseph Franks in the boys’ 11 to 12 years, Molly Fennimore in the girls’ 11 to 12 years age group.
