THE Old Rydeians made quite an impression during their latest appearance at the Flanders Open Rugby Tournament in Belgium.
The event in Dendermonde attracted nearly 100 teams from across the globe, including New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Spain, Holland and Germany.
The Old Rydeians, featuring former Ryde School pupils, kicked off their competition with a 20-0 win against Dutch side SC Thor, thanks to tries from Will Vaughan, Joe Urry and two from Owen Herbert.
Three tries in the final three minutes earned the Island side a dramatic 20-15 victory in their second match.
Rich Vaughan’s two tries, plus another from Herbert, marked the amazing turnaround against Les Bleu Ducks from France, after Cian Cauwenbergh had scored in the first half.
Old Rydeians made it three wins from three matches with a 40-10 victory over host club Dendermondse.
The team produced their finest ever performance at the Flanders Open to win by six tries, scored by Urry (two), Cauwenbergh, Rich Vaughan (two) Nic Marren, Jens Michels and Herbert.
The squad was then invited as guests of honour to a VIP reception to celebrate the host club’s new clubhouse and their 25-year association with Dendermondse.
The following day’s matches ended in 35-5 and 18-10 defeats to French side Roubaix and a strong Chiefs and Indians team from London, meaning Old Rydeians finished 12th overall.
The club’s John Mitchell said: “Overall, it was a very successful and enjoyable weekend with some excellent rugby being played with many new friendships being formed.
“This was probably the best Old Rydeians team to have graced the Flanders Open, even though we have previously finished in fifth position.
“We finished above many highly respected rugby clubs and our play was a pleasure to watch.”
