ATHLETICS

IN DRIVING rain and high winds, almost 30 brave runners took to the roads for IW Road Runners’ 10km championship last week.

The course took the runners from Newport to Wootton and back, with five runners finishing within ten seconds of their original nomination.

Two of the quickest athletes, who are usually way off with their nominations, Paul Cameron and Simon McMorran, together with Simon Wray, were tied for third place on nine seconds.

However, it was husband and wife Steve Rumsey and Sara Truckel who took the main prizes, with Sara second on five seconds, and Steve winning on three.

On time alone, the fastest man was Cameron in 36.39, with McMorran second on 37.59 and Simon Randall third on 38.30. For the ladies, Zoe Elliott gained a new PB of 46.22 to win, with Heather Drudge second on 46.35, and Fiona Owen third with a PB of 47.47.

All the runners and helpers were presented with a goodie bag, organised by Simon and Jo Randall from Love Running, and the club thanked all the local businesses that donated items for this and the raffle which followed the race.

The club now returns to its summer series of races, which are held every Thursday evening from Medina Leisure Centre, with a 7pm start. All runners over 17 years old are welcome.
