HAYLANDS Farm is another £2,000 richer this week after another spectacular day of golfing fun at Ryde Golf Club.

A near-capacity field of 112 golfers teamed up to take part in the club’s annual Mencap Day, which over the years has raised tens of thousands for the Ryde facility, which helps people with learning disabilities.

As well as the fundraising from sponsorship, entries and a huge raffle, there was a competition to win, and after 18 holes of a Texas Scramble, it was the team of Arthur Tippett, Dave Tippett, Billy McCormack and Jack McLoughlin who took the spoils with a nett score of 58.6.

Second, and just 0.2 behind, were Andy Willett, Alan Squibb, Paul Moreton and George Brooks, with J. Whitehead, N. Hallam, I. Ralph and A. Hallam third with 59.1.

The winning mixed team were Marion Johnston, Lyn Brown, Sue Cox and Gary Cox with 59.9, and Hazel Buck, Barry Howlett, Barry Englefield and Tim Barsdell were second with 61.

There were nearest-the-pin prizes for Rose Green and Chinny Taylor, while longest drive prizes went to Lyn Backshall and Paul Venables.

Organiser Jan Walker said: "It was a wonderful day. We were anxious about the weather and really feared that we would have to postpone it. But although it was very windy, it stayed dry. The clubhouse was absolutely packed afterwards and the raffle went on forever. Companies and individuals were so generous."

Jan thanked the County Press, Reynolds & Read, ermc, C&K Dental Laboratories, F. H. Winter and Sons, Wightlink, Salvatore’s, Barfore Catering, Stoneham Construction and Wilson Golf Company, for their support.
