A BIG show in the Big Apple came from Ami Carrigan-Smith as she won a brace of gold medals in an international karate tournament.

Epping's Ami, 13, travelled to New York earlier this month to take on young martial arts experts from all over the world and came out on top.

She won gold in both the individual and team kumite (fighting) for her age category, winning five fights in the individual category and beating a girl from Yugoslavia in the final.

Ami is a member of Shikon Karate Club and trains regularly at Epping Forest Sports Centre.

This was the first time she had won gold in an international event, though she has won six golds in tournaments held in Britain earlier this year.
