Steve Means with his club championship trophies.
YOUNG Island sport stars are continuing to make and break records, with two more reaching new heights in their respective sports.
Golfer Steve Means is thought to have become the youngest ever club champion in Newport Golf Club’s history, while cricketer Danny Briggs has received a call up for England under 19s.
Both are former Carisbrooke High School students.
Danny, 18, of Ryde, has been selected to play for England in the forthcoming Friends Provident test matches against Bangladesh at Scarborough and Derby.
He will then go on to play a number of one-day matches for the national side.
The Ventnor left-arm spinner only made his Hampshire debut in the Friends’ Provident Trophy earlier this season and has spent much of the season with the first-team squad.
He is one of four Hampshire Academy players to be selected for the national squad.
Ventnor Cricket Club spokesman Graeme Burnett said: "This is a fantastic achievement for Danny Briggs and it is a proud day for Ventnor Cricket Club.
"Danny has been with us since he was about nine or ten as his father used to play here."
Sixteen-year-old Steve, of Newport, outplayed around 80 other top golfers to clinch the Newport Golf Club club championship after only three years playing golf.
The former Carisbrooke High School student had a total score of 146 at the end of the two-day tournament, 74 on the Saturday and 72 on the Sunday. His performance also earned him the Westridge Cup for lowest handicap over 36 holes (0 to 12).
Club secretary Dave Boon said: "Everyone was so pleased we had a young player win the championship. I believe he is the youngest player to win the championship, which started back in 1913.
"He had a lot of competition, we have some excellent players and he beat all of them.
"He is a product of our youth academy, which includes a three practice course and driving range. It improves the quality of your game."
Steve’s father, Les, said: "This is a massive achievement. Some players compete for the championship for 25 or 30 years and still don’t manage to win it but Steve has after just three."
