NETBALLSUCCESS in the end-of-season junior tournament rounded off a great year for Shorwell Netball Club.
With some of the youngsters playing in their first ever tournament, Shorwell were winners in the first High Five tournament for under 11s, not losing a single match.
Shorwell under 12s were also victorious in their competition, again winning all their matches. The under 13s were runners up in their group, losing only to Solent, while the under 14s narrowly lost out to the only other team in their group, Gurnard.
The club’s first team were the Island’s only seniors competing in the South Region Open League and they were unlucky not to gain promotion into the second division.
Their promotion hinged on the final game of the season and in the end they lost out by one point to finish third.
There was disappointment for the first team in the end-of-season tournament when they came runners up to Solent in the final match. The fourth team took the plate trophy and the second team came runner up.
The club was also awarded its CAPS accreditation bronze award, which is a clubmark for netball.
SEVERAL Shorwell players also celebrated individual successes during the season.
Lizzie Lewis, who is currently playing in the under-14 junior league, was chosen to attend and train with the South Region Academy, following trials, while second team player Gabriella Southwell gained her C umpiring award.
Alice Sheen, 15, who has been playing in the second team this season, has also been training and playing for Swan Centre in Southampton and has recently been invited to attend the South PDP session, where, if selected, she will be invited to more trials and could be eligible to play in the Shorwell first team in the South Region Open League.
