THE Island branch of Special Olympics GB is desperately looking for volunteers to help set up a new swimming team.
Around 20 Islanders, plus volunteers, will be travelling to Sheffield to take part in this year’s National Summer Games in August.
The Special Olympics provides sporting opportunities and competition for people with learning disabilities, including athletics, table tennis, bowls, badminton basketball and sailing.
However, following the closure of Kingfishers, part of West Wight Swimming Club, there is no swimming opportunities for people with learning difficulties.
Chris Beane, treasurer of the Island branch, said: “The games make a real difference to their lives and gives them self-confidence, keeps them fit and gives them a structure to their week.
“We take various groups to the mainland several times during the year to take part in competitions and it is something they really enjoy.
“We would love to start up swimming again, it could be anywhere on the Island but we need volunteers to help us to contdo that, so we would love to hear from anyone.”
More than 2,500 athletes from all over the country will take part in the August games across 19 sports.
Chris added: “It should be a fantastic occasion.”
Half of £8,000 cost to send the team to the games has been met by Steve Porter Transport Group and Meachers Road Haulage, Southampton.
Anyone keen to volunteer can contact Chris via chris.beane@btinternet.com or by calling 07825373635.
