CYCLING

ANOTHER seven points towards the Wightlink Cycle Racing Team’s national ranking were earned at the ninth round of the Portsmouth Circuits Series last week.

In the third category race, Darren Dollery, Kev Foster and Tim Wiggins were in action, for the 40 minutes plus three laps race.

The pace was slow from the start but soon picked up. Wiggins, who is a past winner of this race, waited for the perfect time to attack and with five minutes to go broke to join the lead rider. Coming around the final corner, Wiggins outsprinted the other rider and crossed the line first but, in the excitement of the moment he raised his hands for his victory salute, only to be disqualified by the race official for taking both hands off the handle bars during the race.

In the end, Foster came 20th, Wiggins 23rd and Dollery 24th.

James Ebdon took part in the elite race, comprising 50 minutes plus a five-lap sprint at the end. Riders attacked from the start with the pace at over 30mph in the first ten minutes. Unfortunately for Ebdon, a lapped rider caused problems for him as he attempted to sprint, but he still managed to come tenth in the sprint to earn valuable points.
