Tough targets for shooters

IT WAS a fun time at Newport and District Rifle Club, as the first of the air rifle competitions was settled.

Each competitor had 32 shots at tiny targets from the unsupported standing position, using .177 calibre air rifles at 20 yards.

This is an extremely difficult discipline on tiny targets, and even crackshot Alan Foxworthy only managed to get 20 hits out of the 32 possible to win.

Dan Young and David Atkin tied for second place on 15 each but Dan won the shoot-out to push David in to third.

l This year marks the 70th anniversary of the club, which was formed from the Newport Home Guard unit in 1944.

The club wants to hear from any former members or anyone else who may be able to shed any light on the early history of the club.
