Perhaps the most impressive show ever staged by students at Boreham Wood Grammar School was a performance of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night in 1960.

The play was produced with help from staff at the world-famous Associated British Picture Corporation, which was based at Elstree Film Studios, in Shenley Road.

ABPC loaned equipment and offered guidance to the school's dramatic society ahead of the show, which was performed on four nights in December 1960.

The beautiful costumes seen in this photograph, were all made by pupils in the art department at the grammar school, which preceded Hawksmoor School.

In creating the costumes and scenery, the students were inspired by the tapestry designs of the 18th Century Spanish painter Francisco Goya.

The players pictured are, from left, Gerald James, Clive Bonnett, Janet Willcox, Dennis Sidley, Alison Baldwin, Anthony Glover and Robert Smith.

The photograph was supplied by Philip Rose of Elstree, whose daughter, Adrienne, appeared in the production as one of the ladies in waiting.

Boreham Wood Grammar School opened, on the site now occupied by Hertswood School in Cowley Hill, in 1956 and became Nicholas Hawksmoor School 15 years later.
