Ultra test for brave IW trio

RUNNING THREE IW runners pushed the limits of endurance by completing the South Downs Way 100-mile ultra race last month.

The race, which follows the British National Trail from Eastbourne in Sussex to Winchester in Hampshire, had a time limit of 30 hours.

Ian Phenix, of Freshwater, Ian Cullingworth, of Arreton, and Dean Rayner, of Ryde, set off together at 6am.

They reached the 50-mile point together in ten hours, 20 minutes and felt good but as the race progressed the three were split up.

In his first ultra race, Ryde Harrier Dean finished in an incredible 23.25.20.

Fellow Harrier Ian Cullingworth finished in 24.45.00, while Ian Phenix, despite suffering an ankle injury at 66 miles, crossed the line in 28.33.12.
