For the first time, Shaftesbury Barnet's junior men and women competed at the same venue in their opening National Junior League Premier Division fixtures at Waltham Forest on Saturday.

The ladies were winners in their first match in the top flight, well clear of Medway, and the men finished a creditable third behind winners Belgrave.

There was a unique double for Shaftesbury, who provided both men's and women's Athlete of the Match.

Julie Dunkley achieved a new league record for the women's shot putt with 14.38m, beating the previous best of 13-73 set five years ago.

Dunkley completed a treble by taking the discus with 35-66 and the hammer with 37-71.

Jenny Grimstone set a new club record in the javelin with 45-10, well ahead of the previous best of 33-76.

The men's man-of-the-match award went to David Parker with his top-ranking 65-58 in the javelin. He followed that with 'B' string shot and discus successes.

Newcomer Graeme Allen had a busy and successful afternoon, with the highlight a personal best of 59-19 in the hammer, the longest by a British junior this year. He went on to perform a personal best in the shot with 14.78m, winning a very close competition.
