Where there’s a Will, there’s a win!

CROSS COUNTRYWILL Newnham proved he was in top form on Sunday by winning the IW Open Cross Country Championships.

Almost 50 runners took part in the Ryde Harriers-organised event, which started from Smallbrook Stadium, with the men running a seven-mile course and the women running a five-mile circuit.

Will, representing IW Athletic Club, was almost two minutes ahead of his nearest rivals, winning in a great time of 44.54. Second was vet40 winner Kristian Rowden, of Ryde Harriers, in 46.34.

Stuart Backhouse, running for HM Prisons, was third in 47.46.

In the other age categories, Wight Tri runner Steve Gratton won the vet50, finishing seventh overall in a time of 51.44, with Glyn Jenkins (Ryde Harriers) second, and 13th overall, in 55.32. Tom Hill (Ryde Harriers) was third, and 20th overall, in a time of 58.58.

In the vet60 category, Harriers’ Graham Maitland won in a time of 58.20.

Mary Norman won the ladies’ race, and the vet45 category, finishing in 39.29.

Unattached runner Ann Abe was second in 41.46, and Wight Tri’s Lucy Wells was third overall, and top vet35, finishing in 42.31.

The top vet 55 was Joy Furmidge, who finished 19th overall in a time of 1.04.24.
