JUST four years after taking up the sport, Isle of Wight-born canoeist Richard Jefferies has competed at his first Olympics.

Richard, formerly of Bembridge, was the only member of London 2012 Team GB chosen to compete in the 1000m C1 Canoe Sprint event.

This morning (Monday) he lined-up against some of the best in the world during the heats at Eton Dorney and finished 5th in his heat, which was enough to earn him a place in the semi-finals.

He finished last in his semi-final but will race again in the B final on Wednesday, August 8.

*After the race, Richard tweeted: "Thanks so much for the overwhelming support out there for me today. Just one more 1000m to get through then the real racing starts on Friday.

He is due to be back in action in the C1 Canoe Sprint 200m, in which he specialises, which starts on Friday and finishes on Saturday.
