ATHLETICSA DOZEN Island youngsters have been selected to represent Hampshire at the English Schools Athletics Championships in Sheffield next Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11.
Following their successes in the Hampshire Schools’ championships and inter-counties match last month the youngsters have been chosen as part of a team of 60.
This is the highest number of Island athletes to be selected for a long time.
Those selected include Ryde School discus throwers Eleanor Mitchell, 14, Lizzie Lovegrove, 16, and Nick Percy, 14, who won both his Hampshire schools and inter-counties events.
Also from Ryde School is Keno Mario Ghae, 16, who will compete in the 100m hurdles.
From Sandown High there is Aiya Abe, 17, competing in the 1,500m steeple chase, Declan Leach, 14, in the 200m and Ryan Tanswell, 14, who won the 400m race in the Hampshire schools competition.
For Carisbrooke High School, Steven Carter, 16, will compete in the 400m, Leon Phillips, 16, in the long jump and Will Newnham, 17, in the 2,000m steeple chase.
Medina’s Callum Woon, 17, will be looking to recreate his Hampshire school competition win in the hammer throw, while Islander Stefan Robinson will be representing Brockenhurst College in the discus.
