STAGE REVIEWIT MAY have had its hiccups but Newchurch Drama Group’s production of The House of Frankenstein was no horror show.
The story centred on failing scientist Baron Von Frankenstein, played by Steve White, who tried desperately to create an antidote to rid his guests of their misfortunes.
The stars of the show were undoubtedly Heather Johnson, as Ygor, Von Frankenstein’s dimwit servant, and Marilyn Bersey, who played the gruesome Frau Lurker.
Whether it was laughing with them or at them, the pair were very funny throughout and gave the show a comical edge.
The strobe-light effect during the scene where the Phantom of the Opera, played by Mark Stewart, chased the entire cast around the stage was another highlight.
The show was set in Castle Frankenstein and the production team did a great job with the stage, which featured a secret hideaway in the bookcase, a grand castle entrance and impressive smoke effects.
On the down side, some of the cast forgot their lines too often.
The odd mishap can be overlooked but I counted at least six occasions where prompts were needed, which was a shame because it put a stain on what was a good show.
I accept the cast are amateurs and they put a lot of hard work into these shows but when people pay to come and watch, they should not expect to see that.
However, the reaction of the audience was a very good one and it was great to see so many people pack into Newchurch Community Centre to support the production.
