Crabs shells out panto laughter

STAGE REVIEWHILARIOUS from start to finish, the comical cast of Shorwell Drama Club provided a pantomime to treasure.

Captain Crabs and the Secret Island was a gem and it was up there with the funniest pantomimes I’ve seen on the Island.

The story centred around Captain Crabs, played by the excellent Vicky Pointer, who was on a mission to find the buried treasure on a secret Island.

However, Crabs’s plan was thwarted by a group of London locals, who posed as pirates to get on his ship, the SS Spongebob.

Pointer was part of a superb double act with dizzy side-kick, Corporal Seaweed, played by Carol Hutchings, who revealed a secret of her own, literally.

Ian Dockray was brilliant in the role of Polly Parrot and he knitted the whole show together, cleverly linking the cast with the audience and making a joke, often at his own expense.

Act two brought two of the show’s highlights, although for completely different reasons.

Anna-Marie Snow and Alice Lindsay, playing Yo Ho and Lucy respectively, beautifully performed Bruno Mars’s Just the Way You Are.

That was only topped by the incredibly funny dance scene by the mermaids, played by the backstage crew, who provided a cameo role which nearly brought the house down.

Throw in a question and answer session with some of the cast, a sing-off and an audience search for the hidden treasure, meant no stone was left unturned.

The rapturous reaction at the end by everyone in the audience, young and old, said it all.

Shorwell Drama Club did a great job, well done to all.

Captain Crabs and the Secret Island continues tonight (Friday), at 7.30pm, and tomorrow, at 6.30pm.
