Two founder members of Borehamwood Athletic Club dusted down their kit to celebrate the club's 25th anniversary at Hawksmoor School on Monday.

Secretary at the club, Pauline Poole, is one of only two surviving original members at the club, which started life on the old football ground in Eldon Avenue. Club auditor, John Kidd, is the other.

The current crop of athletic aces at the club met up with the duo to celebrate the milestone.

"We had a great time on Monday night. Around 400 people -- members, parents and friends -- were there," said Pauline.

The club has spawned two athletes of the highest calibre -- Marion Barrett became an 800m indoor international and Mark Aldridge an international shot-putter -- and club members regularly top the honours at track meets.

Athletes from the club have worn the county colours, and seven have run in the London Marathon over the years.

Pauline said members have raised more than £17,000 towards an all-weather track.

This year is the sixth year of the club's half marathon and fun run, supported by Borehamwood-based Pinnacle Insurance.

The race is set for June 28, and as organisers promise a family day out for mums, dads, kids and schools.

Marketing manager at Pinnacle Chris Brooks said although the company supported sport at the highest level in this country, it was delighted to sponsor grass-roots, local clubs.

Pauline added anyone is welcome to join the club, whatever their standard.

Seven to 11-year-olds meet at Hillside School in Hillside Avenue from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on Sunday.

Youths aged over 11 meet on Mondays at Hawksmoor School, from 6.15pm to 7.15pm.

Adults meet in groups of different abilities at different times and places.
