Members of a local transport group agreed to press the county and borough councils to put money towards disabled access at Elstree and Borehamwood rail station on Thursday.

Elstree and Borehamwood Transport and Road Safety Forum heard that Railtrack's plan to improve the station did not include disabled access to platform two.

Many people with mobility problems are currently only able to use platform one, because they cannot climb the stairs of the footbridge without assistance.

The forum, which includes representatives of the councils, travel firms and passenger groups, agreed that disabled access was required at the station.

Roger Keyworth, of the Association of Public Transport Users, said: "Elderly people will still find it as inconvenient parents will still have to lug their pushchairs over the footbridge."

Borough Councillor John Nolan, the forum's chairman, said he would urge the borough council to put several thousand pounds towards disabled access at the station.

County Councillor Brian York said it was also possible that the county council could make a donation, but it was unlikely to be significant in terms of the total cost.

Railtrack previously suggested that disabled access could only be provided with a lift, which, because of the lay-out of the station, would cost around £1million to install.
