It’s thoroughly enjoyable Millie

Millie played by Rosie Miles and Daniel Milton as Mr Graydon in Thoroughly Modern Millie. Picture by Chris Thwaites.

STAGE REVIEWRYDE School has a reputation for superb theatrical productions and this week’s Thoroughly Modern Millie was no exception.

According to the programme notes, the "thoroughly modern cast have had a ball from start to finish". The stunning show positively fizzed with lively dance routines and tuneful songs.

With great music and oodles of humour, Thoroughly Modern Millie was an excellent choice for the show. Director Sian Evans and musical director Andy Grubb ensured that the pace never slowed.

The young actors and actresses certainly could sing and dance and it was obvious that a huge effort had gone into this show, resulting in a polished production.

The principal players — Rosie Miles (Millie), Hannah Ewens (Dorothy), Imogen Jacobs (Mrs Meers), Amy Joyce (Muzzy), Lydia Lee (Miss Flannery), Caspar Courage (Jimmy), Daniel Milton (Mr Graydon), Michael McCree (Bun Foo) and James McClellan (Ching Ho) — had stage presence beyond their years.

The chorus, too, was very impressive, with great voices and dance steps.

The backstage team also deserve a hearty pat on the back for numerous slick scene changes.

Another key part of the success was the orchestra, made up of present and past students and teachers. My favourite song was The Speed Test, with its fabulous tempo, perfectly delivered by Millie and Mr Graydon.

Anyone who thinks all teenagers are lazy layabouts should have seen this show. To sum up, my 15-year-old companion reckoned: "They’re well good. They could be professional."
