Old Wellingtonians 27 Old Whitgiftians 3

Following last week's victory against local rivals Reigatians, Whitgiftians travelled to Ewell for a Surrey Division One match with powerful Wellingtonians.

In blustery but dry conditions, Whitgiftians started at great pace, with fullback Richard Kiddell making a number of breaks and scrum-half Peter Poole probing with skilful kicks upfield.

Gordon Coletta put Walcountians ahead with a penalty but the home side hit back against the run of play with an unconverted try. Wellington were also enjoying the best of the conditions in the first half and with their large pack bringing them back into the game, two more unconverted tries resulted before half-time.

In the second half Whitgiftians should have made better use of the conditions but the pack were having difficulty holding their opposition.

To add to their problems, Wellington wheeled the scrum from most of Whitgift's ball thereby gaining the put-in. It took the referee a long time to realise that they were doing it deliberately.

Being two tries down, attack was the only option for Walcountians but this led to a converted break away try for the home steam and no way back for the visitors. Wellingtonians added insult to injury with another unconverted try just before the final whistle.
